The Course: The Renaissance Club
This is the 4th time the Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open has been played as a co-sanctioned event between the LPGA and the LET. This is the first year where the tournament has been played on the same course as the year prior. The Renaissance Club hosted in 2019 as well, where Mi Jung Hur won. She will not be in the field this week due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Market Inefficiencies to Focus on This Week
Past History at the tournament- There's something to be said for stepping onto a golf course knowing you've played well there before. There's a whole different world of golf to be played from Scottish chilly winds and hills to the flatlands and humidity of the United States.
Playing the Rose Ladies Series- What better preparation for a links-style course than playing tournaments in the United Kingdom for six weeks? The closest conditions seen on tour this season were at Inverness Club at the Drive On Championship on Saturday when the rain was on and off.
MyBookie has no odds listed this week, so we're going off Bovada's odds here.
Playing Well Recently/The Favorites
Minjee Lee (+650)
Jodi Ewart Shadoff (+2000)
Is it actually an inefficiency if Minjee Lee is the second most likely to win the event, and only (+50) behind the en Fuego Danielle Kang? The wins have been from top-heavy players so far. It's tough to not take Lee when the Australian is consistent in Scotland. In three previous appearances, she has finished in 8th, 2nd, and T6 the last three years respectively.
Danielle Kang is making her first appearance at the Ladies Scottish Open. I think Minjee Lee should be the outright favorite from this history, and I'll take the extra 50.
Ewart Shadoff has never won on the LPGA Tour. Yet, right now, she's one of three players who have finished in the top 5 in the two events since the return to golf, joining the aforementioned Kang and Lee.
It's her third appearance in the Ladies Scottish Open, and her first at the Renaissance Club. For someone playing the third-best golf on Tour so far, and in a tie for the 6th highest odds, I'll take those. While the previous events played are not links style courses, Ewart Shadoff grew up in England. How to approach these is like the back of her hand, and that's another advantage in her corner.
Bets:
7.5 units to win 48.75 units for Lee
5 units to win 100 units for Ewart Shadoff
The Rose Ladies Series Stalwarts
Georgia Hall (+2000)
Charley Hull (+2200)
Hall and Hull both return to the LPGA Tour after each winning an event on the Rose Ladies Series. Hull won the Order of Merit for the series, including winning the first event. Hall won twice and was a runner up thrice in the eight-event series.
Gemma Dryburgh was the only other player to win twice on the series. She missed the cut last week, otherwise she was a strong candidate to be the first repeat pick of the page.
Hall's track record at the Ladies Scottish is also impressive, finishing in the top 25 in all three starts including a top 10 finish in 2017.
Hull finished T24 along with Hall last year, her best finish at the event.
Bets:
5 units to win 100 units for Hall
5 units to win 110 units for Hull
The Sleeper
Mi Hyang Lee (+10000)
Market Inefficiency- History of winning at the tournament
I think I may have broken all the rules on the bets in week 3, but we're sticking with betting on past winners at the tournament. Mi Hyang Lee won in 2017 and makes her return to the tour after the restart. Her last start was a 2nd place finish in Australia at the in February. At +10000, I'll roll the dice on lightning in a bottle. The only winner since the restart hadn't played in any other tournaments either.
Bet: 2.5 units to win 250 units
